Few drinks have a story as charming and unintentional as the Spritz. In the late 1800s, when northern Italy was under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austrian soldiers found Venetian wines stronger than what they were used to. They began asking tavern hosts to spritzen, to “splash”, their wine with a bit of water.
